Science, Page 5!
"Reaction Ready" was a Quicklab where students got to see the effects of calcium chloride, baking soda, and water. Basically, they investigated a chemical reaction.
As the chemicals react, heat and a gas are produced.
Courtney laughs and backs off as Macy feels the heat.
Abi & Jackie try to close the bag as quickly as possible.
Since their bags didn't pop, David, Justin, Rick, & Ryan pick them up & begin investigating them. Curious little scientists, aren't they??
This bag pops, but it's not what people expected.
Abi & Jackie are proud of their little bag of gas.
This bag pops with a little more excitement!
Erika and Carina wait anxiously for the big POP!! at the end.
Jackie and Abi were so proud of their little bag, they just had to have another picture with it!
Ryan's bag didn't pop, so he
helped it along.
Ryan & Tim were so excited for the bag to pop, they had to get a close-up view! |
Jackie cheers on her bag to pop.

In "Speed Control", the students tested two factors that affect the rate of a chemical reaction: Surface Are and Concentration.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In "Cata-what? Catalyst!", the students discovered the effects of a catalyst. In this lab, they used an enzyme in beef liver to break down hydrogen peroxide. They also used this lab to investigate how surface area affects a reaction. They used one "whole" piece of liver, and ground up the other piece.
The students investigate compounds that exhibit both ionic and covalent properties in "Fried Peanuts".
Zack stuff peanuts into his beaker, but seems more interested in Al's part of the lab.
Al stuffs even more in!
Cheyenne & Becca are totally amazed by the polystyrene peanuts & acetone!
Brittni mysteriously removes her glove as she & Jordan shove polystyrene peanuts into the acetone.
Courtney & Amber keep adding polystyrene peanuts to the acetone, while Macy works diligently on the cornstarch peanuts.
Aly & Stephanie watch as Grace drops the polystyrene peanuts into the acetone.
Here's a short video of Aly, Grace, & Stephanie.
Keith keeps packing the cornstarch peanuts in water as he & James check out the other beaker.
Rick watches intently as Ryan drops polystyrene peanuts in.
Marina's having a great time adding the cornstarch peanuts, but Sasha doesn't seem to think that one's all that exciting.
Troy gets a side view as Andy adds more peanuts.
Haileigh's distracted by the static electricity as Jessica keeps adding peanuts.
Tim & Joe alternate adding the polystyrene peanuts - and the acetone is keeping up!!
Rick's pretty cautious, but even he can't keep his hands off this one!! |
In "Copper Plated Keys", the students used their knowledge of acids and ionic compounds to chemically combine copper ions onto metal keys.
Tim records his observations.
Zach & Justin do a little posing as their plating process begins. |
Up close & personal with the copper plating process.
